Surroundings and Activities
Aberdare National Forest Reserve is a vast highland rain forest reserve and connects to Aberdare National Park. The forest boundary is walking distance (200m) from the house along the river. Animals like forest elephant, bongo antelope, giant otter, Colobus monkey and hundreds of bird species are present in the reserve. Deeper into the forest and closer to the Aberdare National Park you can find buffalo, rhino, leopard, giant bush hog, lions and antelope among others. Trips to the forest can be arranged both on foot and by car. A guide is highly recommended and we can help with contacts. All safety measures are the responsibility of the guests and it is advisable to seek local knowledge of the forest before entering. A gate manned by the Kenya Forestry Service can be opened for visitors (by prior agreement with the forest rangers) or through the guide we recommend.
Guests can view the tea pickers and farm activities on one side of the house and we are working on presenting a “Tea Tour” where guests can get an in depth view of the considerable tea farming activities in the environs, from picking the leaves to the finished product.

Access and transport
The drive is about 2 hours from Nairobi (95km) via Thika and the C67 on good tarmac roads. Guests from Nairobi will comfortably be able to reach the cottage before dark if leaving after office hours. The last 3 kilometres of road to the house are not tarmacked and a narrow and steep road leads the last 500 meters to the house. In the dry season, a 2-wheel drive can access the house but 4×4 is advisable in the rainy season. The C 67 leads over the peaks of the Aberdare to Njabini where you can connect to Naivasha.
Public Transport: Matatus and buses are available from Thika Town (at Blue Post Flyover). The last 3 kilometres on dirt road are accessible via motorbikes only but plenty are available cheaply with a driver.
